GBH video with over 33,000 views!
During a GBH News Forum ZOOM interview with David Sibley, the award winning reporter hosting the Forum, Craig LeMoult, noted a question by a participant in regard to the winter crow roost in Lawrence, MA. David Sibley devoted over 3 minutes discussing an overview on behavior and dynamics around the communal winter roost. LeMoult was fascinated and shortly thereafter initiated contact to learn more. Over the following weeks, he made a number of visits to Lawrence to observe the roost and later he brought along one of his top WGBH videographers, Howard Powell, to record the action. As LeMoult learned more about an emerging research project, in Lawrence and with the crows, using LIDAR to detect and track the flight paths of large groups of birds and drones, his interest level went straight up.
The GBH video takes a look at the fascinating Winter Crow Roost phenomenon as well as the roost serving as a test case for government-funded research on new 3-D imaging technology. It allows researchers to pinpoint the course of an individual bird, and larger flocks, and could one day be used – among other things – to detect drone strikes.
